Prof. Li is leading a research group in the state key laboratory of new ceramics and fine processing at Tsinghua University. His research interests range from structural ceramics to electronic ceramic and MEMS-based microfabrication technologies. His early work in Tohoku University focused on partially stablized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics and SiC-AlN ceramic alloys as well as functionaly graded materials (FGM). He has well studied the toughening mechanism of PSZ/Al2O3 ceramics and the phase transformation in Y-PSZ during low-temperature aging in water. His research on the synthesis and high-temperature mechanical properties of SiC-AlN solid solution ceramics also opened a new direction for the development of high-temperature structural ceramics.

After working as assitant/associate professors in Tohoku University, he moved to Tsinghua University as a full professer in 2002. His current research interests are ferroelectric/piezoelectric ceramics and thermoelectric materials as well as their microfabrication technologies.

Prof. Li studied the sintering process of (K,Na)NbO3-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics and revealed the underlying mechanism of the piezoelectric sensitivity to the sintering temperature. He discovered the mechanism of domain engineering to explain the enhanced piezoelectricity induced by aging and re-poling in Li-doped KNN ceramics. His pioneering work on the development of high-performance KNN-based ceramics with high piezoelectricity and enhanced thermal stability has been highly recognized by the relevant academic societies. He also developed the sol-gel process to fabricate highly textured (K,Na)NbO3 films for MEMS applications and conducted early studies on the crystallographic dependence of ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties and domain structures. Prof. Li was invited to deliver plenary lectures about lead-free piezoelectric ceramics at 2016 Joint IEEE International Symposium on the Applications of Ferroelectrics, European Conference on Applications of Polar Dielectrics & Workshop on Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, at Darmstadt, Germany, and 6th International Conference on Advanced Electromaterials (2022) at Jeju, Korea. His group has made great efforts to promote the practical applications of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. In 2019, his group founded a company called Tsingfeng Technology, a pioneer in the industrialization of lead-free piezoelectric materials and components in China.

Prof. Li has also made great contributions to the field of the thermoelectric research. His pioneering work to stimulate and improve the thermoelectric and mechanical properties of bismuth telluride based materials by mixing SiC nanoparticles has attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of thermoelectricity. He and his group revealed a synergistic effect of in-situ nano-composite structures in PbTe-based materials to regulate thermoelectric transport properties and enhance their thermoelectric performances. He research on thermoelectric materials also covered new materials based on earth-abundant sulfide and selenide compounds, including SnS, CuFeS2,Cu12SbS13 and SnSe. While working at Tohoku University in Japan, he invented a MEMS-based microfabrication technology of thermoelectric materials. His work in thermoelectricity has been widely recognized in topics emphasizing the importance of materials processing and nano/micro structure control. Prof. Li was invited to deliver a plenary talk at 15th Annual Conference of Thermoelectric Society of Japan (2018, Sendai, Japan) and the 38th World Thermoelectric Conference (2019, in Gyeongju, Korea). He is one of the 13 present board members of the international thermoelectric society
