博士申请重要信息: IMPORTANT information for PhD applicants: I. TIMING: Tsinghua’s application deadline is extremely early. It usually comes in late August or early September of the previous year. For example, if you plan to begin your PhD studies in 2024, you need to submit your application by some date in August of 2023, more than a whole year before the start of your PhD program. (The exact deadline varies from year to year.) So if you intend to apply, you should act very early. It takes a lot of work to put together a proper application. II. TWO KEY CONSIDERATIONS When evaluating applicants, I have two main considerations: (1) the match or overlap between the applicant's philosophical interests and mine, and (2) the applicant's philosopical ability. Regarding (1), I do not require a perfect match in philosophical interests, but a substantial overlap is necessary. My main research interests are in (a) Wittgenstein (early and late) and (b) intersections between Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophy of Action. For more details, please see my personal academic webpage: https://tsinghua.academia.edu/HaoTang. If you are in doubt regarding (1), contact me first by email at cogitang@yahoo.com. Regarding (2), I pay particular attention to the writing sample. This should be a piece of work that best shows your philosophical ability. This is best shown by developing your own ideas about a particular topic of your own choice. The model here is a typical journal article. Please note the following specific points: (2.a) Length: a proper writing sample should be about 5,000 words (in English) or 10,000 words (in Chinese), like a typical journal article. It can be a re-worked version of (part of) your MA thesis, but simply submitting your MA thesis is strongly discouraged. (2.b) Content: the writing sample should be a relatively finished product, again like a typical journal article. (It need not have been published.) (2.c) Quantity: Please do NOT submit more than one writing sample. If you submit more than one, you risk having none of them read. An application without a writing sample will not receive serious consideration from me. There is no point in sending me your writing sample before the application deadline, because I begin to read the writing samples (from all the applicants) only after the application deadline. I do not offer comments on writing samples. III. Research Plan If and when you apply, make sure that you also include a research plan for the proposed doctoral study. This plan can be tentative or explatory, but it should indicate the broad directions in which you would like to go. |
